In the Light of Ornaments
Multimedia Installation | 2025 video | 17’30’’
While violence by sovereign states is on the rise, The video of “In the Light of Ornaments” follows a burning candle, kicked and scattered by police boots. Its melted traces gradually form a monument of grief, witnessing and resisting the surveilling light cast from above. A rigid and piercing light that blinds as it reveals.
The video installation can be read as a deconstructed flag: The shape created by the melting of the candle, is turned into a sculpture, resembling the flag top ornament, unscrewed and placed down on the ground. The suspended fabric of the flag acts as a projection surface. The pole is placed to partly block the projected video and is polished to act as a mirror, reflecting the images as light back into the viewers’ eyes, regardless of where they stand.
These components work together to expose the symbolic and visual mechanisms of authority and to question how power operates and manifests in public and institutional spaces.
