Yield Point

2-Channel video Installation | metal stand , monitor | 17’ | 2024

Sound, music and voice by Hanita Firoozmand
Sclupture production by Nils Benedikt Fischer

Yield Point is a two-channel video installation with two displays facing each other from a very short distance. This setup blocks the frontal view, meaning the viewer can only see the image from the side. This perspective offers a degree of protection from total confrontation. The monitors also act as mirrors, reflecting each other’s images while streaming their own. As viewers stand before the work, they confront the presence of another viewer facing them on the opposite side, so that viewing becomes an act of both facing and looking away.

The Farsi idiom “چشم دوختن”, literally translating to “stitch the eye” is used to describe a highly focused staring without blinking. One can say to stitch the eyelids to keep them open or to stitch the eye to the subject of confrontation.
In a climate of radical silence and ignorance, the narrator describes the various muscles humans use to turn away from what they see. As eyes seek protection, concrete images intertwine, resembling bodies with muscles, stretching themselves beyond the frame, resisting and challenging the authority of the seemingly factual and neutral narrative.
From a certain standpoint, how far can muscles be stretched? How elastic are images? …
